Destination:  Kuala Lumpur      Singapore

Kuala Lumpur

Fondly called KL by most regular visitors, Kuala Lumpur proudly flaunts its East Meets West lifestyle with a little arrogance and oodles of attitude. This shining concrete paradise was once a humble tin-mining centre in the 1850s ravaged after the Selangor Civil War, and two World Wars. Yet, with the steady inflow of Indian Chettiars (money-lenders), Muslim traders, Chinese merchants and the slow but constant development process, KL rose to prominence as the capital of the Federated Malay States.

Although Kuala Lumpur means muddy confluence (as it was at the muddy confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers), there is hardly a trace of any mud in the city. High-tech modern buildings, skyscrapers and glitzy hotels so much so meet and greet you with a 'welcome to the future' vibe than anything else. Temples, mosques and little pieces of history, however, are carefully hidden behind this facade for those who want to take a stroll down time.

The gleaming lights of Petronas Twin Towers with its museums, shops and eateries; the drowning vigour of Chinatown; sprawling Lake Gardens (Taman Tasik Perdana); the Central Market with its brimming handicraft stalls, artistry and colours; the National Museum, a perfect place to brush up on your history; and the beautiful depths of Batu Caves - Kuala Lumpur asks you to live and let live without pushing you to the limits.

Get wild at a ritzy lounge or shop all day at one of the city's magnificent malls. There is no end to things you can do here. To get a feel of the city, climb the giddying heights of the Menara Kuala Lumpur Observation Deck, after snacking on some tasty Curry inPetaling Street. Here, heaven-high and foreboding, you can see the city lie before you as a sparkling treasure chest. The view encapsulates the feel of one of the greatest cities in Asia, and there is no denying it.

Singapore

Futuristic, self-assured, sleek and spanking new, that is Singapore's skyline for you. The skyscrapers and architectural wonders in this country that is fast consuming its countryside reflect a state of progressive mind. Your date with style begins at Changi Airport.

The bumboats still crawl at a snail's pace giving you a chance to see the past and present of Singapore in its buildings. The Esplanade, Marina Bay Sands and Sentosaare fantasies. A walk around Emerald Hill will give you another surprise. A pleasant one, painted in candy colours: the Peranakan shophouses.

The nights give you more than just a shimmering skyline. There is a nightlife that is nothing less than chic. Zouk is the hands down winner and is the club to dance away to pulsating music. For those who prefer something quieter and sophisticated, the bars around Emerald Hill and Mohamed Sultan Road are perfect.

But for a real taste of Singapore, its history and multi-ethnic culture, take your eyes away from the sky and to the food and shopping districts. The festivals and the local language Singlish are other reminders of its culture. Sift through Peranakan slippers and clutches in Katong, the high end designer stores around Orchard Road, and the chaos inChinatownLittle India, and Geylang Serai. Electronics and computers come cheap.

Laos has become popular with tourists for its relaxed style of living and for retaining elements of the "original Asia" lost elsewhere. The official tourism slogan is "Simply Beautiful". The main attractions for tourists include Buddhist culture and colonial architecture in Luang Prabang; gastronomy and ancient temples in the capital of Vientiane; backpacking in Muang Ngoi Neua and Vang Vieng; ancient and modern culture and history in The Plain of Jars region (main article: Phonsavan); Laos Civil War history in Sam Neua; Trekking and visiting hill tribes in a number of areas including Phongsaly and Luang Namtha; spotting tigers and other wildlife in Nam Et-Phou Louey; caves and waterfalls near Thakhek; relaxation, the Irrawaddy dolphin and Khone Phapheng Falls at Si Phan Don or as they are known in English, the Four Thousand Islands; Wat Phu, an ancient Khmer temple complex; and the Bolaven Plateau for waterfalls and coffee.

Luang Prabang and Wat Phu are both UNESCO World Heritage sites, with the Plain of Jars expected to join them once more work to clear UXO has been completed. Major festivals include Laos New Year which is celebrated around 13-15 April and involves a water festival similar but more subdued than that of Thailand and other South-East Asian countries.

The Lao National Tourism Administration, related government agencies and the private sector are working together to realise the vision put forth in the country's National Ecotourism Strategy and Action Plan. This includes decreasing the environmental and cultural impact of tourism; increasing awareness in the importance of ethnic groups and biological diversity; providing a source of income to conserve, sustain and manage the Lao protected area network and cultural heritage sites; and emphasising the need for tourism zoning and management plans for sites that will be developed as ecotourism destinations.

Laos is known for its silk and local handicraft product, both of which are on display in Luang Prabang's night market, among other places. Another speciality is mulberry tea.
